Alonso backs Enzo Fernández as Man City interest lingers

Xabi Alonso has played down speculation over Enzo Fernández’s future at Chelsea, insisting the midfielder remains fully involved in his plans as Manchester City continue to be linked with a late move.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham, Alonso praised Fernández’s attitude in training and confirmed the Argentina international is preparing to feature on Monday. His comments represent the clearest indication yet that Chelsea are planning for the new season with the 25-year-old still at Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder’s future has nevertheless remained one of the prominent unresolved stories of the closing weeks of the transfer window. Manchester City have explored the possibility of signing Fernández as part of their midfield restructuring, but Chelsea have placed a valuation of around £120 million on one of their most important players.

Chelsea had previously set City a deadline to formalise their interest, which passed without an offer being submitted. That strengthened the expectation at Stamford Bridge that Fernández would remain at the club, although City’s interest has not entirely disappeared.

The Guardian reported this week that City were still considering a move, with the Premier League side assessing further midfield additions before the window closes. Chelsea’s valuation, however, represents a substantial obstacle to any late agreement.

Alonso avoided offering an absolute guarantee over Fernández’s position beyond the deadline, but his public backing was notable after a period of uncertainty surrounding the midfielder. Fernández was jeered by sections of the Chelsea support during the recent pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad, with speculation over a possible departure contributing to the atmosphere around his return to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s immediate stance remains considerably clearer. Fernández continues to train with the first team, retains the confidence of his manager and is being prepared for the start of the Premier League campaign rather than being held back while negotiations take place.

That leaves the pressure on Manchester City if their interest is to develop into anything more concrete. No agreement has been reached and Chelsea have shown no indication that they are prepared to reduce their valuation simply to facilitate a deal.

Unless that position changes before the transfer deadline, Alonso appears ready to begin his first Premier League season at Chelsea with Fernández at the heart of his midfield.
