West Brom sign Toby Collyer permanently from Manchester United

West Bromwich Albion have completed the permanent signing of Toby Collyer from Manchester United, bringing the midfielder back to The Hawthorns on a four-year contract.

The 22-year-old returns after spending part of last season on loan with Albion and has now left Manchester United permanently following 13 senior appearances for the club.

Neither side disclosed the transfer fee, but The Athletic reports that West Brom will pay an initial £3million, with add-ons potentially taking the overall value of the deal to £7.6m.

Manchester United have also retained a 40 per cent sell-on clause.

The structure gives United significant protection despite the relatively modest guaranteed fee.

Most of the add-ons are understood to be considered achievable, while others are linked to longer-term outcomes including West Brom winning promotion to the Premier League, reaching European competition and Collyer earning senior England recognition.

For West Brom, the move brings back a player already familiar with the club and with James Morrison’s methods.

Collyer spent the first half of the 2025/26 campaign on loan at The Hawthorns before injury disrupted his spell. He later joined Hull City for the second half of the season and added further Championship experience.

Morrison nevertheless saw enough during Collyer’s first spell to support a permanent move.

The midfielder offers defensive discipline, energy and the ability to operate as the deeper player in a central pairing or three-man unit, while his age gives West Brom scope to develop the player across the length of the contract.

For Manchester United, the transfer continues a midfield reshaping that has significantly altered Collyer’s pathway to first-team football.

The arrivals of Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans increased competition in the position and made a permanent exit increasingly likely before the transfer deadline.

Hull City and Middlesbrough also made approaches for Collyer, but the midfielder chose West Brom as the best route to regular senior football.

The deal therefore represents a relatively clear solution for all parties.

West Brom secure a midfielder they already know, Collyer gets a permanent platform in the Championship, and United retain substantial future value through add-ons and the sell-on clause.

For a club pushing to re-establish itself as a promotion contender, that combination of familiarity, age and resale potential gives West Brom one of the more strategically interesting Championship deals of the final days of the window.
