Werder Bremen revive Niclas Füllkrug interest as transfer conditions shift

Werder Bremen have revived their interest in bringing Niclas Füllkrug back to the club, with the financial conditions surrounding a potential move reportedly becoming more favourable.

BILD reports that a return to Bremen is once again being considered after West Ham softened their position on the 33-year-old striker. The Premier League club had previously been expected to demand a transfer fee, but Füllkrug could now potentially be allowed to leave without one.

That change would remove one of the major obstacles to a third spell at Werder, although a deal remains at an early stage and there is no indication that the clubs have reached an agreement.

Füllkrug returned to West Ham this summer following a loan spell at AC Milan during the second half of the 2025/26 campaign. West Ham still list the Germany international among their first-team players, while his squad number for the new season has yet to be confirmed.

He also did not travel with the West Ham squad for their pre-season fixture in Magdeburg earlier this month, adding to uncertainty over his place in the club’s plans.

A return to Bremen would carry obvious significance for both player and club. Füllkrug previously developed into a Germany international during his time at Werder and finished as the Bundesliga’s joint leading scorer in 2022/23 before leaving for Borussia Dortmund.

Werder’s renewed interest does not yet amount to advanced negotiations, however. Significant questions remain over Füllkrug’s salary and the terms on which West Ham would sanction his departure.

For now, the key development is that a move which previously appeared difficult on financial grounds has returned to consideration. Werder have not announced talks or an agreement, while Füllkrug remains under contract with West Ham until 2028.
