VfB Stuttgart vs Köln: Hoeneß demands response after heavy Bayern defeat

The visitors opened their Bundesliga campaign with a 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim and have won both of their competitive matches so far this season, having also beaten Würzburger Kickers 2-1 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

That start gives René Wagner’s side a very different platform heading into Matchday 2. Köln survived a difficult relegation fight last season before finishing 14th, and Wagner’s permanent appointment has given the club greater continuity heading into the new campaign. An opening league victory has immediately strengthened that sense of stability.

Recent meetings, however, favour Stuttgart. They won both Bundesliga encounters between the sides last season, including a 3-1 victory at the MHP Arena in February after late goals from Ermedin Demirović and Deniz Undav settled the contest. That record gives Hoeneß’ team a useful reference point, even if the circumstances around Friday’s match are different.

For Stuttgart, the priority is straightforward: ensure the opening-night defeat in Munich remains an isolated result and begin their home campaign with greater authority. For Köln, another positive performance would reinforce the impression that their strong start is more than a short-term bounce.

With Stuttgart seeking a reaction and Köln arriving with confidence, Friday’s meeting offers an early test of which side can impose the direction of its season.
