Union Berlin sign Felix Uduokhai as defensive rebuild gathers pace

Union Berlin have completed the permanent signing of Felix Uduokhai from Beşiktaş, bringing the experienced centre-back back to the Bundesliga as part of a significant rebuild of their defence.

The 28-year-old arrives after two seasons in Turkey, having previously made 150 Bundesliga appearances across spells with Wolfsburg and Augsburg. Union have not disclosed either the transfer fee or the length of his contract.

Uduokhai’s arrival addresses an obvious area of need following the departures of Diogo Leite and Danilho Doekhi, two centre-backs who had been central to Union’s defensive structure in recent seasons.

Both left at the end of their contracts this summer, removing considerable Bundesliga and European experience from the squad. Uduokhai gives Union an established replacement who already understands the demands of the German top flight and should require less adaptation than a player arriving in the league for the first time.

His move to Berlin also ends a two-year spell with Beşiktaş. Uduokhai initially joined the Turkish club from Augsburg before the transfer was made permanent, but has now opted for a return to Germany at a point when Union are reshaping under Mauro Lustrinelli.

The new head coach has inherited a side that finished 11th last season and is attempting to move toward a more ambitious, proactive style. Rebuilding the defence without losing too much experience has therefore been one of the central challenges of Union’s summer.

Uduokhai offers an immediate solution. His 150 Bundesliga appearances give Union a proven option in central defence, while his experience in Turkey adds another layer to a squad undergoing substantial change.

The transfer is complete, although the financial terms remain undisclosed. For Union, the significance is clearer: after losing two established centre-backs in the same summer, they have responded by bringing a familiar Bundesliga profile back to Germany.
