Swansea City 2-0 Watford: Eom and Idah fire Swans to Championship summit

Swansea City moved to the top of the Championship with an impressive 2-0 victory over Watford at the Swansea.com Stadium, extending their unbeaten start to four matches.

Eom Ji-sung opened the scoring after eight minutes before Adam Idah doubled the advantage in the 29th, with the two attackers combining for both goals as Vitor Matos’ side took control of the contest inside the opening half-hour.

The result moves Swansea to 10 points from four matches and ends Watford’s unbeaten league start.

Swansea began with authority.

Idah tested Federico Ravaglia early and Marko Stamenic headed against the post before the hosts found the breakthrough.

Stephen Eustaquio, making his home debut, released Idah into space and the Republic of Ireland striker showed composure to square for Eom, who finished from close range for his second goal in successive matches.

Watford attempted to respond through Mattie Pollock and Hector Kyprianou, but Swansea continued to create the cleaner opportunities.

The second goal was even more impressive.

Eom received possession on the left, moved inside and produced a reverse pass that split the Watford defence.

Idah timed his run perfectly, steadied himself as Ravaglia advanced and slipped his finish through the goalkeeper’s legs.

Two goals.

Two combinations between Eom and Idah.

And a 2-0 lead before the half-hour mark.

That relationship defined Swansea’s strongest attacking spell.

Idah gave the hosts a central reference capable of threatening in behind, while Eom repeatedly moved from the left into more dangerous inside positions.

Watford could not prevent the pair from exchanging roles between creator and finisher.

Alessio Dionisi’s side improved after falling two goals behind.

Mamadou Doumbia headed over before the interval and the visitors started the second half with greater intent, but Swansea’s defensive structure remained secure.

Lawrence Vigouroux was required to make saves, yet Watford never generated the sustained pressure needed to seriously threaten the lead.

Swansea could have added a third.

Melker Widell released Eom into another dangerous position, only for Ravaglia to race from his goal and deny the South Korea international.

Widell also drove narrowly wide later in the half.

The hosts finished with around 60 per cent possession, 18 attempts and eight shots on target, compared with nine attempts and three on target for Watford.

Those numbers reflected the balance of the evening.

Watford had periods when they could move the ball into Swansea territory.

Swansea produced the greater volume and quality once they arrived there.

Idah’s performance was especially significant.

The striker scored his second league goal of the season, created the opener and worked aggressively without the ball before leaving midway through the second half to a standing ovation.

Eom was equally influential.

His early finish settled Swansea, while the pass for Idah’s goal was the outstanding creative action of the match.

For Watford, the defeat ends an encouraging unbeaten sequence that had included victory over Southampton and draws with Wrexham and West Ham.

They arrived in South Wales with confidence but were punished by a Swansea side that played with greater speed and clarity during the decisive opening period.

For Matos, the broader picture is increasingly impressive.

Swansea have now collected 10 points from 12, scored freely enough to punish opponents when opportunities appear and shown the defensive control required to protect leads.

Their first-half quality established the result.

Their second-half management ensured it was never seriously endangered.

Four matches into the season, Swansea are no longer simply enjoying a good start.

They are setting the early Championship pace.
