Sunderland sign Kevin Danso on loan with conditional obligation to buy

Sunderland have completed the signing of Kevin Danso on loan from Tottenham Hotspur for the remainder of the 2026/27 season, with the agreement including a conditional obligation to make the move permanent next summer.

Tottenham officially confirmed the defender’s departure on deadline day, stating that the permanent clause will be triggered subject to performance-related conditions.

The Guardian has reported that the eventual purchase would be worth around £25 million. Neither club has disclosed the financial terms officially, so that figure remains reported rather than confirmed.

Danso leaves Tottenham after 18 months in north London. The Austria international initially joined Spurs on loan from Lens in February 2025, with an obligation that subsequently turned the move permanent ahead of the following season.

He went on to make 52 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions and scored once. His spell included a role in the squad that won the Europa League before his position in the defensive hierarchy changed during the subsequent rebuild.

The 27-year-old now moves to a Sunderland side adding an experienced Premier League and international centre-back to its defensive options. Danso also has previous experience in English football from a season-long loan with Southampton earlier in his career, as well as spells in the Bundesliga and Ligue 1.

The structure gives Sunderland immediate use of the defender while providing a pathway to a permanent transfer next summer if the agreed performance conditions are satisfied.

Unlike the earlier deadline-day reports, the loan itself is no longer pending: Tottenham have formally announced Danso’s move to Sunderland. What remains conditional is the permanent element, with the obligation dependent on specified sporting criteria being met during the season.
