Stoke City 1-0 Norwich City: Galbraith strike ends Potters’ losing start

Stoke City finally brought their losing start to the Championship season to an end as Ethan Galbraith’s early goal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Norwich City at the bet365 Stadium.

Galbraith struck after 13 minutes, with his effort taking a deflection on its way beyond Vladan Kovačević, before Stoke spent much of the remainder of the evening protecting the advantage.

The result gives Mark Robins’ side their first league points of the campaign after defeats against Swansea City, Southampton and Wolves.

For a team that had conceded nine goals across those opening three matches, the clean sheet was almost as significant as the victory itself.

Norwich had started with greater control of possession, but Stoke punished them with one of the first decisive attacking actions of the game.

Galbraith found enough space around the edge of the attacking phase to shoot, and the deflection left Kovačević with little chance.

It was the midfielder’s second Championship goal of the season after also scoring against Southampton.

Norwich responded strongly.

Darlin Yongwa tested Viktor Johansson from distance before Andre Brooks produced an even clearer opportunity in the 35th minute, receiving from Mohamed Touré and shooting from inside the area.

Johansson saved again.

Those interventions established the pattern Stoke would ultimately have to survive.

Norwich carried more of the ball and increasingly pushed the hosts backwards, while Robins’ side became more concerned with protecting central areas and limiting the quality of the final action.

The same dynamic continued after half-time.

Philippe Clement made changes in search of greater attacking threat, introducing Anthony Musaba before later turning to Mathias Kvistgaarden and Papa Amadou Diallo.

Stoke gradually defended deeper.

They also became more dependent on Johansson.

The goalkeeper’s most important intervention came in the 80th minute when Musaba met Pelle Mattsson’s delivery inside the six-yard area and directed a header towards the bottom corner.

Johansson reacted sharply to keep it out.

Norwich continued to apply pressure through the closing stages and won a late free-kick with one final opportunity to equalise, but the attempt struck the Stoke wall.

That final action summed up the visitors’ night.

They found enough territory to make Stoke uncomfortable.

They did not find the finish required to change the score.

For Norwich, the defeat is a frustrating reversal after Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Burnley had suggested Philippe Clement’s side were beginning to build momentum following two opening league defeats.

At Stoke, possession and pressure produced no goal.

For the hosts, the importance of the result is obvious.

Their first three Championship matches had produced zero points, nine goals conceded and growing early pressure around Robins.

Tuesday offered a different version of his team.

Stoke were not dominant and did not need to be.

They scored early, defended the lead with greater discipline than in previous weeks and had a goalkeeper capable of delivering the decisive interventions when their structure was breached.

Galbraith supplied the goal.

Johansson made sure it was enough.

After three league defeats, Stoke finally have something on which to build.
