Southampton explore James Ward-Prowse return from West Ham

Southampton are exploring a move to bring James Ward-Prowse back to St Mary’s, with the Championship club considering a reunion with their former captain as he enters the final year of his West Ham contract.

Sky Sports reports that Southampton are assessing the possibility of a deal, although no formal bid or agreement has yet been confirmed. The interest is therefore genuine but remains at an early stage rather than an advanced negotiation.

Ward-Prowse would return to a club where he spent the vast majority of his career. West Ham’s official profile records 410 Southampton appearances, with 55 goals and 54 assists, before his move to London in 2023.

His contract at West Ham runs until the summer of 2027, meaning Southampton would still need to negotiate a transfer rather than wait for a free-agent opportunity. That gives West Ham some leverage, but the midfielder’s current position also creates room for a deal if all parties are open to it.

Ward-Prowse was not included in West Ham’s squad for their League Cup meeting with Southampton earlier this week. That absence does not confirm an imminent exit, but it adds another layer to a situation already attracting interest from his former club.

For Southampton, the appeal is obvious. Ward-Prowse would bring immediate Championship-level quality, extensive Premier League experience and a set-piece threat that has defined a significant part of his career.

The move would also be more than a sentimental return. Southampton are trying to build a squad capable of competing at the top end of the Championship, and a midfielder with Ward-Prowse’s experience and familiarity with the club could shorten the adaptation period considerably.
