Roma draw Real Madrid at home as PSG and Manchester United headline Champions League away tests

Roma’s return to the Champions League after a seven-year absence will bring Real Madrid to the Stadio Olimpico and send the Giallorossi to Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United in a demanding league-phase draw.

The eight opponents were confirmed following Thursday’s draw in Monaco. Roma will host Real Madrid, Sporting CP, Lille and Slovan Bratislava, while their away programme takes them to PSG, Manchester United, Fenerbahçe and AEK Athens.

The Pot 1 allocation immediately sets the tone.

Real Madrid will visit the Olimpico for the marquee home fixture of Roma’s European return, while the corresponding away assignment sends them to Paris to face PSG. It gives Roma one heavyweight opponent with home advantage and another on the road, where the margin for error will be considerably smaller.

The Pot 2 pairing is structured in much the same way.

Sporting CP travel to Rome, giving the Giallorossi another established European opponent at home, while Manchester United await at Old Trafford. Those first four assignments alone ensure Roma’s return to the competition will include several of European football’s most recognisable stages.

The lower pots provide a clearer opportunity to accumulate points, but little guarantee of comfortable nights.

Lille will visit the Olimpico, where Roma should see home advantage as an important part of the equation. The corresponding away fixture against Fenerbahçe carries a very different challenge, with Istanbul providing one of the most intense environments in the league phase.

Slovan Bratislava complete Roma’s home programme, while AEK Athens provide the fourth away assignment.

That distribution makes the Olimpico particularly important.

Real Madrid are the obvious exception, but Sporting, Lille and Slovan give Roma three home fixtures in which a strong return could significantly improve their position in the 36-team table. The away schedule offers less control: PSG and Manchester United provide elite-level tests, while Fenerbahçe and AEK add two difficult environments where the context of the match can become as important as the seeding.

For Roma, that matters because this is not simply another European campaign.

The Champions League is returning to the club for the first time in seven years. That changes both the atmosphere around the draw and the expectations attached to it. Qualification itself marks a return to the elite level, but the structure of the league phase leaves little incentive to treat participation as the destination.

The top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16. Clubs finishing ninth to 24th enter the knockout play-offs, while the bottom 12 are eliminated from Europe.

Roma therefore need more than isolated headline performances.

A result against Real Madrid or PSG would carry obvious weight, but the campaign may be shaped just as heavily by whether they take maximum advantage of Sporting, Lille and Slovan at home and find points in Athens or Istanbul.
