Reece James handed midfield role as Xabi Alonso outlines Chelsea captain’s importance

Reece James returned to Chelsea action with a prominent midfield role as Xabi Alonso continued to shape his side ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Chelsea captain started alongside Moises Caicedo in central midfield during Saturday’s 3-1 friendly win over Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge, with Alonso again deploying a nominal 3-4-3 system.

It was James’ first appearance of pre-season after he returned to training earlier this week following England’s run to third place at the World Cup. The 26-year-old played 62 minutes and made an immediate contribution after half-time, delivering the cross from which Joao Pedro headed Chelsea back in front.

James has operated in midfield before during his Chelsea career, so his deployment against Sociedad does not necessarily indicate a permanent positional change. However, Alonso’s comments after the match underlined how highly he values the captain’s ability to perform different roles.

The Chelsea head coach highlighted James’ leadership, experience, composure in possession and competitiveness, while describing his positional flexibility as an important quality for the team.

“He’s very flexible in his style and in different positions,” Alonso said, adding that James is a key player for Chelsea.

The match also gave Alonso an opportunity to reintegrate several players whose pre-season preparations were delayed by the World Cup. New signings Maxence Lacroix and Morgan Rogers also featured after returning to training during the week.

Chelsea have now completed their pre-season schedule and will turn their attention to their Premier League opener away to Fulham on August 24.

How Alonso uses James when competitive football begins remains open, but his first outing under the new head coach offered an early indication that the captain’s versatility could remain an important part of Chelsea’s tactical options.
