Real Sociedad draw Juventus and Crystal Palace in Europa League league phase

Real Sociedad have been handed a Europa League league-phase draw built around difficult away assignments, with trips to Juventus and Crystal Palace offset by home meetings with Lyon and Bournemouth.

The Basque side, seeded in Pot 1, will play four matches at Reale Arena and four away as they begin another European campaign under the 36-team league format.

Sociedad will host Lyon, Viktoria Plzeň, Bournemouth and Torreense. Their away schedule takes them to Juventus, Union SG, Crystal Palace and Lillestrøm.

The trip to Turin is the obvious headline fixture.

Juventus represent the highest-profile opponent in Sociedad’s draw and will provide a major test away from home, particularly in a competition where the margin between direct qualification and an additional knockout play-off can be narrow.

Crystal Palace add another demanding away assignment. The Premier League side bring a different profile to Juventus, but the intensity and physical demands of a trip to England could make that fixture one of the most difficult on Sociedad’s schedule.

The home programme, however, offers more control.

Lyon will provide the strongest test in San Sebastián, while Bournemouth give Sociedad another meeting with English opposition but this time with home advantage. Viktoria Plzeň and Torreense complete a set of fixtures in which the Spanish side should expect to collect a significant proportion of their points.

Union SG should not be underestimated either. The Belgian club have established themselves as competitive European opposition in recent seasons, and the trip there adds another potentially awkward fixture to Sociedad’s away programme.

Lillestrøm complete the schedule and, on paper, represent the most manageable of Sociedad’s four away opponents, although the geographical and environmental demands of a trip to Norway add another variable.

The broader picture is therefore clear: Sociedad have avoided an overloaded home schedule but will need consistency on the road if they want to challenge for a top-eight finish.

Under the league-phase format, the top eight clubs advance directly to the round of 16, while teams finishing between ninth and 24th must enter a two-legged knockout play-off.

For Sociedad, the decisive question is likely to be how effectively they manage Turin, London and Brussels. Their home draw offers enough opportunity to build a strong points total, but the away schedule leaves little room for poor performances.

The Europa League league phase begins on September 16 and 17 and concludes on January 28, with UEFA still to confirm the exact order and kick-off times of Sociedad’s eight fixtures.
