Mourinho names unchanged Real Madrid XI for Real Sociedad clash

José Mourinho has kept faith with an unchanged Real Madrid starting XI for his first competitive game back at the Santiago Bernabéu, resisting several obvious opportunities to rotate for Wednesday night’s La Liga meeting with Real Sociedad.

Madrid begin with the same side that secured a dramatic 2-1 victory away to Espanyol in their opening league match, a clear indication that Mourinho wants continuity rather than immediate experimentation during the early stages of his second spell in charge.

Thibaut Courtois starts in goal behind a back four of Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konaté, Dean Huijsen and Álvaro Carreras.

Federico Valverde and Bernardo Silva again form the central midfield base, with Jude Bellingham operating further forward. Arda Güler retains his place on the right side of the attack alongside Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé.

The most notable decision concerns Güler and Yan Diomande.

Diomande was formally presented as a Real Madrid player this week and made his competitive debut from the bench against Espanyol, but Mourinho has resisted the temptation to give the 19-year-old his first start at the Bernabéu.

Instead, Güler receives a second consecutive start after playing an important role in Madrid’s opening victory.

The decision provides an early indication of the hierarchy Mourinho is establishing in an attack filled with elite options. Diomande was one of Madrid’s major summer investments and has been recruited with the expectation of becoming a significant attacking figure, but his integration is being managed rather than accelerated simply because of his transfer status.

Güler, meanwhile, has been given an opportunity to establish himself within the starting structure.

His technical quality between the lines offers Madrid a different dynamic from the direct acceleration Diomande can provide. Starting from the right does not restrict the Türkiye international to the touchline; he can move inside, combine with Bellingham and Bernardo and create space for Dumfries to advance from full-back.

That combination is one of several Mourinho has chosen to preserve from the Espanyol match.

Dumfries again starts ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, another significant selection call given the level of competition in the position. The Netherlands international offers greater physical power and vertical running, while Alexander-Arnold remains among Mourinho’s strongest options when Madrid require more distribution and creativity from deeper areas.

On the opposite side, Carreras keeps Marc Cucurella on the bench.

Cucurella was another high-profile addition to the squad and appeared as a substitute in the opening league match, but Carreras has retained Mourinho’s confidence for the first home fixture of the campaign.

The central defence is unchanged as well.

Konaté and Huijsen continue together ahead of Antonio Rüdiger, with Madrid still managing several absences across the defensive unit. Keeping the same partnership gives Mourinho another opportunity to develop cohesion between two centre-backs who are expected to carry substantial responsibility during the new season.

The decision to leave the entire starting XI untouched is particularly notable because the performance at Espanyol was not without problems.

Madrid required a late winner from Carlos Espí after allowing their hosts back into the contest, and Mourinho acknowledged afterwards that his team were still adapting following a disrupted summer and significant changes to the squad.

His response has been continuity rather than correction through personnel.

That places greater responsibility on the players who started the first match to show that the difficulties in Barcelona were part of an early-season adjustment rather than structural problems that require immediate changes.

The midfield will again be central to that assessment.

Bernardo and Valverde are being asked to provide control behind Bellingham, a configuration that gives Madrid substantial technical quality but also places significant defensive demands on the pair when possession is lost.

Bellingham remains the most advanced of the three after scoring Madrid’s opening goal of the league season against Espanyol. His ability to arrive inside the penalty area remains an important element of Mourinho’s attack, particularly when Mbappé moves away from the central lane or Vinícius carries possession inside from the left.

Real Sociedad should provide a different examination.

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side arrive in Madrid looking for a response after beginning their campaign with defeat against Real Betis. Their ability to compete through midfield and attack through players such as Takefusa Kubo and Mikel Oyarzabal should test whether Madrid can maintain greater control than they managed for periods of their opening fixture.

For Mourinho, there is also significance beyond the immediate tactical contest.

This is his first competitive match at the Bernabéu since returning to Real Madrid, more than a decade after the end of his first spell in the Spanish capital. The squad he brings back onto that pitch bears little resemblance to the one he left, but the demands surrounding it remain familiar.

Madrid are expected to challenge immediately.

Their opening victory delivered the points without yet delivering a complete performance. Wednesday night offers the first opportunity to establish something more convincing in front of their own supporters.

Mourinho has chosen not to change the personnel in search of that improvement.
