RB Leipzig–Lens deal for El Chadaille Bitshiabu collapses over final terms

El Chadaille Bitshiabu’s proposed loan move from RB Leipzig to RC Lens has collapsed after the two clubs failed to reach agreement on the final terms of the deal, reopening the defender’s future in the closing stages of the transfer window.

Negotiations had advanced significantly over recent days and Leipzig were prepared to sanction a temporary departure for the 21-year-old in order to give him more regular first-team football.

According to Sky Germany, however, the clubs were unable to settle the remaining contractual details and the move is now off.

The precise point of disagreement has been reported differently. Earlier information indicated that Leipzig and Lens were discussing a season-long loan without a purchase option, with the clubs also negotiating how Bitshiabu’s salary would be divided. Local Leipzig reporting subsequently identified the conditions surrounding a potential purchase option as the decisive obstacle.

What is clear is that a deal which had appeared close to completion has broken down before the final stage.

That leaves Leipzig with the same squad-management problem they were attempting to solve.

Head coach Martín Demichelis acknowledged before the Bundesliga opener against Borussia Mönchengladbach that the club currently have too many players competing for places and indicated that a loan would make sense for Bitshiabu.

The situation at left centre-back has become particularly congested.

Castello Lukeba, who had been considered a possible departure earlier in the summer, remains at the club, while Maxime Estève has also joined the competition for the position. Bitshiabu has consequently slipped down the immediate hierarchy despite Leipzig continuing to view him as a player with long-term value.

That distinction is central to the club’s approach.

Leipzig have not been looking to move Bitshiabu because they have abandoned their plans for him. The objective of a loan was to provide regular minutes that are unlikely to be available consistently under the current squad configuration.

The former Paris Saint-Germain defender was left out of Leipzig’s squad for Saturday’s 3-0 Bundesliga victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach, further underlining the uncertainty surrounding his short-term role.

Lens had offered an obvious route back to France and the possibility of significant playing time, making the collapse of the negotiations particularly notable this close to the deadline.

Leipzig must now decide whether another suitable loan can be arranged before the window closes or whether Bitshiabu remains with Demichelis’ squad and competes for minutes behind the club’s other left-sided centre-backs.

There is still time for another solution to emerge, and Demichelis has already indicated that Leipzig expect significant movement around the squad during the final days of the market.

But the Lens route — which had progressed from interest to advanced negotiations — is no longer the expected outcome.

For Bitshiabu, the immediate question has therefore shifted.

It is no longer whether his move to Lens can be completed, but whether Leipzig can find another destination that satisfies the same objective without compromising their longer-term control of a defender they still intend to develop.
