RB Leipzig draw Manchester City at home as Real Madrid and Manchester United headline Champions League trips

RB Leipzig’s return to the Champions League will include a home meeting with Manchester City and two heavyweight away assignments at Real Madrid and Manchester United, giving Martín Demichelis’ side one of the league phase’s more demanding road schedules.

Leipzig officially confirmed all eight opponents following Thursday’s draw in Monaco. PSV Eindhoven, Shakhtar Donetsk and Lens will join Manchester City as visitors to the Red Bull Arena, while Leipzig travel to Real Madrid, Manchester United, Feyenoord and Como. UEFA independently lists the same home-and-away allocation.

The Pot 1 pairing immediately defines the draw.

Manchester City will travel to Leipzig for the marquee home fixture, giving the Bundesliga side the advantage of their own stadium against one of the competition’s principal contenders.

The corresponding assignment is considerably more severe: Leipzig must go to the Santiago Bernabéu to face Real Madrid.

That contrast continues in Pot 2.

PSV visit Germany, offering Leipzig another significant European night at home, while Demichelis’ side travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. It means two of Leipzig’s biggest-name opponents — Real Madrid and United — both come away from the Red Bull Arena.

A road schedule with little room for comfort

The lower pots do not entirely ease the travelling burden.

Feyenoord await in Rotterdam, adding De Kuip and its intense European atmosphere to a schedule already containing Madrid and Manchester. Como provide Leipzig’s fourth away opponent, bringing a different challenge against a club entering its first Champions League campaign.

At home, the picture is more favourable.

Shakhtar Donetsk and Lens join City and PSV in Leipzig. Neither should be treated as straightforward, but the overall allocation gives the German club a clearer opportunity to establish a points base at the Red Bull Arena than on the road.

That balance could become decisive under the league-phase format.

Every club plays eight different opponents — one home and one away from each seeding pot — with the top eight qualifying directly for the round of 16 and teams placed ninth to 24th entering the knockout play-offs.

For Leipzig, maximising the four home fixtures therefore carries obvious strategic value.

City are the standout obstacle, but PSV, Shakhtar and Lens give Demichelis’ side opportunities to collect the points that could reduce the pressure surrounding trips to Madrid, Manchester and Rotterdam.

A demanding Champions League return

Leipzig themselves have framed the draw as the beginning of their return to the Champions League stage under Demichelis, with the club highlighting the eight-match schedule as a new European challenge.

The exact order, dates and kick-off times will be confirmed when UEFA releases the full fixture schedule, which is due no later than Saturday, August 29. The league phase begins across September 8-10.

The headline fixtures are clear enough already.

Manchester City will come to the Red Bull Arena. Real Madrid await at the Bernabéu. Manchester United await at Old Trafford.

But Leipzig’s route through the league phase may ultimately depend less on those marquee nights than on whether they can exploit the structural advantage created by their home schedule.

If the Red Bull Arena delivers consistently, the difficult road programme becomes manageable.

If it does not, trips to Madrid, Manchester and Rotterdam could quickly turn Leipzig’s Champions League return into a fight simply to remain inside the top 24.
