Fer López scores twice as Wolves beat Preston 3-1 at Deepdale

Wolverhampton Wanderers secured their first Championship victory of the season with a convincing 3-1 win over Preston North End at Deepdale.

Fer López gave Wolves the perfect start in the eighth minute, driving forward from the flank before firing past Daniel Iversen at the near post.

Preston responded and created several promising moments before the interval, but Wolves remained the more dangerous side and carried their one-goal advantage into half-time.

César Peixoto introduced Adam Armstrong in the 67th minute and the substitute made an immediate impact, doubling Wolves’ lead just four minutes later after combining with Raúl Jiménez.

López then struck again in the 82nd minute, arriving at the back post to finish from Tommy Doyle’s flick and effectively end Preston’s hopes of a comeback.

The hosts did manage a consolation goal in stoppage time, with Jordan Thompson scoring from outside the box in the 91st minute, but it came too late to change the outcome.

Wolves had started the Championship campaign without a win, making the result an important early response following their relegation from the Premier League.

For Preston, the defeat extends their winless start to the new season, while Wolves leave Deepdale with their first three points of the campaign and a performance built around López’s decisive contribution.
