Nottingham Forest agree club-record deal with Chelsea for Liam Delap

Nottingham Forest have agreed a club-record deal with Chelsea for Liam Delap, moving decisively to strengthen Oliver Glasner’s attack with one of the Premier League’s most physical young centre-forwards.

The agreement is worth an initial £45 million and could rise to £50m through add-ons, according to Sky Sports. Delap is scheduled to undergo a medical on Wednesday before completing the move.

If finalised, the transfer would comfortably surpass Forest’s previous record outlay of £37.5m for Omari Hutchinson and underline the scale of the club’s backing for Glasner as he reshapes the squad following his arrival at the City Ground.

Delap, 23, leaves Chelsea only a year after joining from Ipswich Town for £30m. His season at Stamford Bridge never developed as either the player or club had hoped: he scored twice and provided three assists in 41 appearances across all competitions, starting only 16 of those matches.

Injury and suspension disrupted the early part of his campaign, while competition for attacking places limited his opportunities thereafter. Chelsea’s own end-of-season figures show Delap played 1,811 minutes across all competitions, considerably fewer than several of the club’s other senior forwards.

Forest are nevertheless investing in a profile that remains difficult to find. Delap combines the size and aggression required to occupy centre-backs with the mobility to attack space behind them, and at 23 retains substantial development potential. His strongest Premier League evidence came before his Chelsea move, when his performances for Ipswich established him as one of England’s most closely watched young strikers.

The move also makes sense within the structure Glasner is trying to build. Forest entered the final stage of the window looking for another centre-forward, with the durability of Chris Wood a consideration as the club plans beyond the immediate term. Delap offers a younger focal point capable of leading the line while giving Forest a different level of physical intensity through the centre of the pitch.

For Chelsea, the agreement represents a significant piece of player trading. A sale for at least £45m would generate a £15m increase on the £30m fee paid to Ipswich last summer, despite Delap failing to establish himself as a regular starter during his only full season at Stamford Bridge.

His departure also reflects the increasingly competitive attacking picture under Xabi Alonso. Delap had moved away from the first-team group as Chelsea worked to resolve the futures of players considered available before the deadline, making a permanent departure increasingly likely.

Forest have now won the race despite interest from elsewhere in the Premier League, including Everton. What began as an attempt to add another forward has developed into the biggest transfer commitment in the club’s history.

The deal is not formally complete until Delap passes his medical and the remaining contractual formalities are concluded. But with an agreement between the clubs now in place, Forest are positioned to make the 23-year-old a central part of Glasner’s new-look attack.
