Newcastle United vs Bournemouth: Jaissle’s unbeaten start meets a stubborn recent history

Newcastle United return to St. James’ Park on Saturday looking to turn a promising start under Matthias Jaissle into early momentum, but AFC Bournemouth arrive carrying one of the more unusual records in this fixture.

The Magpies are unbeaten after their opening two Premier League matches, having followed a 2-2 draw with Liverpool by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in north London. Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scored in that victory, giving Jaissle his first league win and Newcastle their first clean sheet of the campaign.

That result also gave Newcastle an opportunity to record back-to-back league victories for the first time since March. Jaissle has spoken positively about the way his new-look squad is adapting following a transformative summer, with several arrivals already taking on significant roles in his system.

Bournemouth’s start has been less productive in terms of points, but not without encouragement. Marco Rose’s side were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City on the opening weekend before drawing 1-1 with Everton at the Vitality Stadium. They looked set for their first win of the season in that second match after Alex Scott opened the scoring, only for James Tarkowski to equalise in stoppage time.

That late concession leaves Bournemouth with one point from two games, but their recent record against Newcastle offers a stronger source of confidence.

The Cherries are unbeaten in their last eight Premier League meetings with Newcastle, a sequence stretching back to 2020. They also won 2-1 at St. James’ Park in April, when Adrien Truffert scored an 85th-minute winner after William Osula had cancelled out Marcus Tavernier’s opener.

For Newcastle, that history adds another layer to a match that already carries significance. Jaissle’s first weeks have produced signs of stability after a summer of major change, and victory on Saturday would move the conversation from a respectable opening into something more substantial.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, need to turn competitive performances into points. Their opening two matches have shown they can stay in difficult contests, but Rose is still waiting for his first Premier League win in charge.

Saturday therefore brings together two sides at different stages of the same early-season question: Newcastle are trying to prove their encouraging start has weight, while Bournemouth are trying to show that improved performances are close to becoming results.
