Newcastle sign Amar Dedic from Benfica on five-year deal

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Bosnia and Herzegovina international Amar Dedic from Benfica, with the 24-year-old full-back agreeing a five-year contract with the Premier League club.

The deal strengthens Newcastle’s defensive options ahead of the new season following the departure of Kieran Trippier. Benfica confirmed that the transfer is worth €35.9 million and that the agreement also includes a sell-on clause.

Dedic arrives at St James’ Park just over a year after joining Benfica from Red Bull Salzburg. The Bosnia international had developed through Salzburg’s system, making his professional debut with feeder club Liefering before spending a season on loan at Wolfsberger. He later established himself in Salzburg’s first team and wore the captain’s armband on numerous occasions despite his young age.

His career also included a loan spell with Marseille during the second half of the 2024/25 season before his move to Lisbon. Benfica signed him in July 2025 on a contract running until 2030, but his stay in Portugal has now ended after Newcastle moved to bring him to the Premier League.

The transfer reunites Dedic with Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle. The pair previously worked together at Salzburg and were part of the club’s Austrian Bundesliga title-winning campaign in 2022/23. Their existing relationship gives Newcastle a player already familiar with Jaissle’s methods as the club continues preparations for the start of the domestic season.

Dedic has also established himself at international level with Bosnia and Herzegovina and represented his country at the 2026 World Cup, where Bosnia reached the round of 32 before being eliminated by co-hosts the United States. His arrival gives Newcastle another experienced option on the right side of defence before their Premier League opener against Liverpool at St James’ Park on August 23.
