Newcastle open talks with Manchester City over Nico González move

Newcastle United have opened talks with Manchester City over a potential move for midfielder Nico González as they continue efforts to rebuild their midfield before the start of the Premier League season.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, discussions between the two clubs are under way, although negotiations are not yet at an advanced stage. No agreement has been reached over a transfer and there is currently no indication that a deal is close to completion.

Newcastle’s interest comes amid significant changes in the centre of their squad following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães this summer. The club have consequently been assessing several midfield options as they look to add experience and depth ahead of their opening league fixture against Liverpool.

González, 24, joined Manchester City from Porto in February 2025 in a deal worth €60 million. He was initially recruited during a period in which City were attempting to compensate for Rodri’s long-term absence and went on to establish himself as a regular option in midfield.

His position at the Etihad has since become less certain amid further changes to City’s squad. The Spain midfielder was used from the bench during Sunday’s Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, while City continue to reshape their midfield ahead of the new campaign.

González has previously indicated that he was comfortable with his situation at Manchester City and willing to compete for his place, meaning Newcastle would still need to reach an agreement both with the player and with City before any move could progress.

For Newcastle, the talks form part of a wider attempt to strengthen a squad that has undergone considerable turnover during the summer window. The club have already completed several additions but remain in the market for an established central midfielder capable of taking on an immediate role.

At this stage, González should be regarded as an active target rather than an imminent signing. Talks with Manchester City represent a concrete step in Newcastle’s search, but the negotiations remain at an early stage and could still develop in several directions before the transfer window closes.
