Napoli draw Arsenal at home as Manchester City headlines demanding Champions League away schedule

Napoli have been handed a Champions League league-phase draw that combines a marquee home meeting with Arsenal and a demanding trip to Manchester City, while Porto and Villarreal add further weight to their away schedule.

The eight opponents were confirmed following Thursday’s draw in Monaco. Arsenal, Club Brugge, Bodø/Glimt and Viking will visit the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, while Napoli travel to Manchester City, Porto, Villarreal and Sabah FC.

The Pot 1 pairing immediately establishes the two headline fixtures.

Arsenal will come to Naples, giving Napoli home advantage against one of last season’s Champions League finalists. The corresponding away assignment is considerably less forgiving: a trip to Manchester City, where Napoli will face one of the strongest squads in the competition.

That contrast runs through much of the draw.

Club Brugge provide an experienced European opponent at home, but Napoli must travel to Porto for their Pot 2 fixture. The Portuguese side have a long record of making home European nights uncomfortable for major visitors, adding another significant test to Napoli’s road programme.

Pot 3 brings an all-LaLiga matchup with Villarreal away from home, while Bodø/Glimt travel to Naples.

Villarreal’s draw has already placed substantial emphasis on their home matches, and Napoli’s visit to La Cerámica gives both clubs a fixture likely to carry considerable weight in the middle of the league-phase table.

The lower-pot allocation provides Napoli with their clearest opportunities to take control.

Viking will visit the Maradona, while Napoli travel to Azerbaijan to face Sabah FC. Those fixtures arrive with less profile than Arsenal or Manchester City, but under the league-phase format they can be just as important in determining whether a club finishes inside the top eight.

That is the central challenge created by Napoli’s draw.

Their home schedule offers a strong platform. Arsenal are the obvious headline opponent, but Club Brugge, Bodø/Glimt and Viking give Napoli three further matches in which home advantage should carry significant value.

The away calendar is far less comfortable.

Manchester City provide the toughest assignment, Porto add one of European football’s more established road environments, and Villarreal ensure that three of Napoli’s four away matches come against clubs from major European leagues.

Under the 36-team league-phase format, every side plays eight different opponents, with the top eight advancing directly to the round of 16. Teams finishing ninth to 24th enter the knockout play-offs.

That places additional pressure on Napoli to maximise their opportunities in Naples. A strong home return would give them room to absorb dropped points on a road schedule containing City, Porto and Villarreal. Failure to do so would leave little margin in the final standings.

UEFA will confirm the exact order, dates and kick-off times of the eight fixtures separately.

For Napoli, the shape of the campaign is already clear.

Arsenal provide the marquee night at the Maradona. Manchester City provide the marquee trip.

But the route to the knockout stage may ultimately be determined away from those two headline fixtures — by whether Napoli can turn a favourable home platform into enough points to survive one of the more demanding road schedules in the draw.
