Monza submit offer for Derby goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström

Monza have made a move for Derby County goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström as the newly promoted Serie A club look to strengthen their squad before the end of the transfer window.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Monza have submitted an offer worth €2.5 million for the Sweden international, with the proposal also including a 50 per cent sell-on clause. Derby have not announced a response and there is no agreement between the clubs at this stage.

The structure of the bid is notable. While the initial fee is relatively modest, the unusually large sell-on percentage would leave Derby with a significant interest in any future transfer if Zetterström were to move on from Monza.

Derby are also approaching an important decision over the goalkeeper’s future. Zetterström joined the Championship club from Djurgården in August 2024 on a three-year contract, meaning his current deal is due to expire next summer.

His value to Derby has increased considerably during his two seasons in England. The 28-year-old made 32 Championship appearances in 2025/26, keeping seven clean sheets, and won the club’s Save of the Season award for his stop from Scott Twine against Bristol City.

Zetterström then enhanced his profile further at the 2026 World Cup. He started two matches for Sweden during the tournament, gaining international exposure at a time when interest in his club future was already beginning to grow.

That combination of performance level and contract situation explains why Derby now face a delicate choice. Keeping Zetterström would preserve an established first-choice goalkeeper for the new Championship campaign, but without an extension the club also risk losing negotiating leverage as he moves deeper into the final year of his deal.

Monza’s offer is therefore an opening move rather than an advanced transfer. There is no indication yet that Derby are prepared to accept the terms, and the Italian club may need to improve the guaranteed financial package if they want negotiations to progress.

For now, Zetterström remains a Derby player. The significant development is that interest has turned into a reported formal bid, placing his future at Pride Park firmly back on the agenda during the closing stages of the window.
