Marcus Rashford in line for Manchester United return after 611 days

Marcus Rashford is in line to make his first Manchester United appearance in 611 days as Michael Carrick’s side prepare to face AC Milan in their final major pre-season test.

The Sun reports that Rashford is expected to be involved against Milan, which would mark his first appearance for United since December 2024.

The possibility of his return carries added significance because of the path his career has taken since that last game.

Rashford fell out of favour under Rúben Amorim before leaving United on loan, first for Aston Villa and later for Barcelona. His future at Old Trafford appeared increasingly uncertain during that period, with a permanent departure widely considered one of the most realistic outcomes.

The situation has changed under Carrick.

Rashford has been reintegrated into first-team training and is once again part of United’s senior squad as the club prepares for the new Premier League season.

A return against Milan would also create an immediate reunion with Amorim, now in charge of the Italian club.

That subplot adds interest to the fixture, but for United the more important question is whether Rashford can re-establish himself as a meaningful option in Carrick’s attack.

The 28-year-old remains one of the most experienced players developed through United’s academy and has previously produced seasons in which his pace, direct running and ability to attack space made him one of the club’s most dangerous forwards.

His challenge now is different.

After a long absence from United’s matchday squad and two loan spells away from Old Trafford, Rashford must show that he can contribute consistently within the structure Carrick is building.

His versatility could still be valuable. Rashford is capable of playing from the left, through the middle or in a more fluid attacking role, giving United another option across the front line if he remains part of the squad.

The timing of his potential return is also important. With the Premier League season approaching, the Milan friendly represents one of the final opportunities for Carrick to assess combinations and fitness levels before competitive football begins.

Rashford’s involvement should not yet be treated as confirmed until the official team selection is announced.

If he does feature, however, the match will represent more than another pre-season appearance.

It would mark the beginning of a new chapter at Manchester United for a player whose time at the club appeared close to ending less than a year ago.
