Manchester United complete £70m deal to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton

Manchester United have completed the signing of Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion, securing one of their long-term midfield targets in a deal worth up to £70 million.

The 22-year-old Cameroon international has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with United holding an option for a further season. Sky Sports reports that the agreement is worth £65m in guaranteed payments plus £5m in potential add-ons, with Brighton also retaining a sell-on clause.

Baleba’s arrival completes a pursuit that stretched across almost a year. United explored a move for the midfielder before ultimately backing away from Brighton’s valuation, but maintained their interest and returned this summer once the conditions of a deal became more attainable.

The transfer also represents another significant stage in Michael Carrick’s reconstruction of United’s midfield. Baleba follows Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to Old Trafford, giving the head coach a younger, more athletic core with markedly different profiles.

Where Baleba stands apart is in his capacity to defend and progress possession in the same phase. He is comfortable receiving under pressure, has the physical range to cover large areas without the ball and can break through midfield lines by carrying possession rather than relying exclusively on passing combinations. Those qualities address a structural weakness United have spent successive windows trying to solve.

There is also an element of projection in the investment. Baleba’s 2025/26 campaign at Brighton did not reproduce the level that had initially made him one of the Premier League’s most coveted young midfielders, but United have placed considerable value on the player he can become rather than judging the transfer solely on his most recent season.

Director of football Jason Wilcox said Baleba’s combination of qualities would complement United’s existing midfield and highlighted both his Premier League experience and scope for further development. Baleba, meanwhile, described Manchester United as his dream club and identified the opportunity to work under Carrick as an important factor in the move.

The midfielder leaves Brighton three years after arriving from Lille in 2023. He made 112 appearances during his time on the south coast, developing from a high-upside prospect into a senior Cameroon international and an established Premier League midfielder.

United will not, however, have immediate access to their new signing. Baleba is recovering from an ankle ligament injury sustained during pre-season and is expected to return around the middle of September. That timetable puts the Manchester derby on September 13 at the earliest edge of his potential comeback.

His absence means the immediate impact of the deal will have to wait, but the strategic importance is already clear. Following a 2-0 defeat at Hull City in their Premier League opener, United have added a midfielder capable of changing both the physical level and the balance of Carrick’s central unit.

The £70m package carries substantial expectation, particularly after an inconsistent final season at Brighton. United’s calculation is that Baleba’s best years are still ahead of him — and that at 22, they have secured the midfielder around whom a significant part of their next team can be built.
