Manchester United 5-2 Ipswich: Bruno Fernandes hat-trick sparks Old Trafford comeback

Manchester United turned an uncertain afternoon into a 5-2 demolition of Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick and creating another goal to deliver Michael Carrick’s first Premier League victory of the season.

For much of the opening half-hour, however, United looked vulnerable enough for another difficult result.

Ipswich repeatedly attacked the spaces around United’s back line and Julio Enciso and Daizen Maeda both tested Senne Lammens before the visitors took a deserved lead in the 29th minute.

Abdul Fatawu isolated Luke Shaw on the right, beat him for pace and found Leif Davis arriving inside the area. The left-back finished high into the net to give Gary O’Neil’s side the advantage.

Old Trafford became increasingly tense.

United had lost 2-0 at Hull City on the opening weekend and were again struggling to turn possession into control until a single Ipswich error changed the match.

Marcelino Núñez lost his footing as half-time approached, allowing Matheus Cunha to steal possession and release Fernandes.

The United captain needed no second invitation.

He drove a left-footed finish past Kjel Scherpen in the 40th minute to restore parity and alter the emotional balance of the contest before the interval.

United emerged with far greater intensity after the restart.

Bryan Mbeumo struck the crossbar from close range in the 52nd minute before the hosts moved ahead four minutes later in controversial circumstances.

Harry Maguire’s attempt was deflected into his own net by Jacob Greaves after Maguire had handled the ball during the build-up.

The goal survived a VAR review because Maguire was not the scorer and the handball was judged not to fall within the automatic attacking-handball offence that would have disallowed a direct goal.

Ipswich barely had time to recover.

In the 61st minute, Greaves brought down Cunha as the Brazilian drove through on goal and Fernandes converted the resulting penalty for his second.

Seven minutes later, the captain completed his hat-trick.

United attacked into the space Ipswich were increasingly leaving behind and Fernandes finished calmly to make it 4-1, completing a devastating 12-minute spell in which Carrick’s side effectively decided the game.

Fernandes was still not finished.

In the 82nd minute, he lifted a perfectly weighted pass behind the Ipswich defence for Mbeumo, who lobbed Scherpen to add United’s fifth.

Chuba Akpom took advantage of a late defensive mistake to score a stoppage-time consolation, but by then the significance belonged entirely to United and their captain.

Fernandes finished the afternoon with three goals and an assist, directly influencing four of United’s five goals at a moment when the team badly needed a response to the opening-weekend defeat.

The performance was not flawless.

Ipswich’s first goal exposed defensive spacing that remains a concern and Akpom’s late strike came from another avoidable error.

But once Fernandes equalised, United finally played with the aggression and speed Carrick had been demanding.

There were also encouraging signs elsewhere.

Academy graduates Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford both started, with Rashford making his first Manchester United start since 2024, while Cunha’s movement repeatedly destabilised Ipswich once the game opened up.

The result gives United their first three points of the new Premier League campaign and immediately changes the mood around Carrick’s side before a more demanding sequence of fixtures.

For Ipswich, the frustration will come from how quickly a competitive performance unravelled.

They led after 29 minutes and had caused United genuine problems, but one mistake before half-time was followed by a second-half collapse that Fernandes punished with ruthless efficiency.

For United, the broader conclusion is equally clear.

Questions remain about their defensive control, but with Fernandes operating at this level, their attacking ceiling remains high enough to transform matches in a matter of minutes.
