Manchester City handed heavyweight Champions League draw with PSG and Barcelona among eight opponents

Manchester City have been handed a demanding Champions League league-phase draw, with home meetings against holders Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli accompanied by a trip to Barcelona among their eight fixtures.

City’s Pot 1 assignment pairs them with PSG at the Etihad Stadium and Barcelona away, immediately giving their European campaign two heavyweight tests against clubs expected to challenge deep into the competition. Manchester City officially confirmed the complete draw on Thursday.

Their Pot 2 opponents are Sporting CP at home and Porto away, adding two trips involving Portuguese opposition across the league phase.

The difficulty extends into Pot 3. Napoli will visit Manchester, while City travel to Germany to face RB Leipzig — another fixture against a side with significant recent Champions League experience.

City’s final two opponents are AEK Athens at home and Lens away.

That balance gives City four fixtures in which they will expect to impose themselves at the Etihad, but the away schedule is considerably more complicated. Trips to Barcelona, Porto and Leipzig offer very different tactical environments, while Lens adds another potentially difficult European away night rather than an obvious low-risk fixture.

The meeting with PSG is the standout home assignment. The French club enter the competition as defending champions, while Barcelona represent the most prominent challenge on the road. Napoli and Leipzig ensure the draw retains significant difficulty beyond the two headline fixtures.

Under the league-phase format, every club plays eight matches — one home and one away against opponents from each of the four seeded pots. The top eight teams in the 36-club table qualify directly for the round of 16, while those finishing from ninth to 24th enter the knockout play-offs.

The exact order, dates and kick-off times of City’s eight matches have not yet been confirmed. Manchester City said UEFA will publish the full fixture schedule no later than Saturday, August 29.

For City, the draw therefore offers little room for a slow start. PSG and Napoli come to Manchester, but three of their four away assignments — Barcelona, Porto and Leipzig — immediately raise the level of difficulty in a league phase where every dropped point can influence the route into the knockout rounds.
