Leeds 1-1 Brentford: Calvert-Lewin rescues point after Farke’s tactical reset

Leeds United recovered from a difficult first half to earn a 1-1 draw against Brentford at Elland Road, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring a late equaliser after Daniel Farke’s tactical changes shifted the balance of the contest.

Brentford were the stronger side before the interval and took a deserved lead through Kevin Schade in the 41st minute.

Keane Lewis-Potter found space on the left and delivered for Schade, who converted for his first goal of the season after the visitors had repeatedly exposed gaps in Leeds’ defensive structure.

The situation had already become more complicated for Leeds when Joe Rodon was forced off injured in the 34th minute, with Nico Elvedi introduced in his place.

Brentford used that disruption effectively.

Their midfield controlled territory, their press limited Leeds’ ability to progress cleanly and James Trafford was required to make several important interventions to prevent the visitors from extending their advantage.

Farke responded at half-time.

Leeds moved away from the back-five structure that had struggled during the opening 45 minutes and played with greater aggression and numbers higher up the pitch.

The changes gradually altered the rhythm of the match.

Ao Tanaka brought greater control in midfield, while Lukas Nmecha gave Leeds another presence around the penalty area and helped force Brentford deeper.

The equaliser finally arrived in the 79th minute.

Nmecha delivered from the right and Calvert-Lewin attacked the cross inside the area, finishing beyond Caoimhín Kelleher to score his first Premier League goal of the season and reward Leeds’ improved second-half display.

Leeds then came close to completing the turnaround.

Calvert-Lewin threatened again late on, only for Kelleher to produce an important save as Brentford protected the point.

The result preserved the unbeaten Premier League starts of both sides.

Brentford will take encouragement from the control they established during the first half, particularly after their emphatic opening-weekend victory over Tottenham, but the inability to maintain that level after the interval prevented them from taking maximum points.

For Leeds, the more significant element was the response.

Farke’s side looked uncomfortable for long periods before half-time, lost Rodon to injury and entered the interval behind, but tactical changes and a more assertive second-half approach transformed the contest.

Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser ultimately ensured that an afternoon which had threatened to expose Leeds’ early-season vulnerabilities instead became another demonstration of their ability to recover within matches.

The immediate concern now surrounds Rodon, with the defender’s condition requiring assessment after he was unable to complete the first half.
