Ipswich Town vs Liverpool: Iraola’s side chase first Premier League win at Portman Road

Liverpool travel to Portman Road on Friday night still searching for their first Premier League victory under Andoni Iraola, with newly promoted Ipswich Town presenting another early test of how quickly the club’s new era can settle.

Both games followed a similar pattern: Liverpool fell behind, improved as the contest developed and recovered late enough to avoid defeat.

That resilience has prevented a damaging start, but Iraola has made clear that repeatedly chasing matches is not sustainable. Ahead of the trip to Suffolk, the Liverpool head coach said his side must begin games with greater aggression after spending much of their opening fixtures playing from behind.

Ipswich, however, have already shown that Portman Road can provide a difficult environment. Iraola highlighted that first-half performance in his pre-match assessment, arguing that Ipswich were better than the eventual result suggested and warning Liverpool that another slow start could leave them exposed.

For Ipswich, the challenge is to respond to that heavy defeat without losing the confidence generated by their opening home win. Four points would represent a strong return from their first three matches back in the top flight, while another positive performance against one of the league’s biggest clubs would reinforce their belief that they can compete at this level.

Liverpool arrive with the greater individual quality and expectations, but the pressure is also more immediate. Two comeback draws have kept them unbeaten; Portman Road now offers Iraola’s side the opportunity to turn recovery into progress.
