Ipswich agree Tammy Abraham loan with Aston Villa as striker weighs move

Ipswich Town have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign Tammy Abraham on loan, with the final decision over the move now resting with the striker.

Abraham returned to Aston Villa in January but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter during the second half of last season, with Ollie Watkins continuing to lead the line for Unai Emery’s side.

His situation has shifted again during a turbulent start to Villa’s new campaign. Watkins is now expected to leave for Al Hilal, while Villa are also moving towards the signing of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea as Emery reshapes his attacking options.

Despite those changes, Villa are prepared to allow Abraham to leave on loan if he accepts Ipswich’s proposal.

That would give Ipswich a striker with substantial top-flight and European experience at a time when the club are attempting to add both depth and proven quality to Gary O’Neil’s squad.

Abraham’s profile differs from much of Ipswich’s recent recruitment. The 28-year-old has previously scored regularly in the Premier League and Serie A, while his first spell at Villa included a major role in the club’s promotion from the Championship in 2018/19.

Ipswich have already been one of the busiest promoted clubs in the market and completed the signing of Argentina midfielder Exequiel Palacios from Bayer Leverkusen this week. Their interest in Abraham indicates that the recruitment drive is not finished, particularly in attack.

The club have also started the Premier League season strongly, giving O’Neil greater freedom to strengthen from a position of early momentum rather than reacting to immediate pressure.

For Villa, the proposed loan is another indication of the scale of change taking place in Emery’s forward line. Watkins is heading towards an exit, Jackson is close to arriving and Abraham now has a decision to make over an opportunity to secure more regular football elsewhere.

No move has yet been officially announced, and Abraham’s approval remains the outstanding step. But with Ipswich and Villa reported to have reached an agreement, the proposed loan has moved into its decisive phase.
