Ibrahima Konaté handed early Real Madrid opportunity amid defensive injuries

Ibrahima Konaté could be handed an early opportunity to establish himself in Real Madrid’s defence as injuries reduce José Mourinho’s options at centre-back ahead of the new La Liga season.

The France international is part of Madrid’s squad for their final pre-season friendly against Schalke 04, giving him a chance to feature for the club for the first time since completing his move from Liverpool in June.

Konaté signed a contract running until 2030 and joined first-team training earlier this week following his post-World Cup break. His integration has coincided with a shortage of available central defenders.

Éder Militão remains unavailable after undergoing surgery on a proximal hamstring tendon injury in April, while Raúl Asencio is recovering from a muscle injury in his right thigh. Dean Huijsen is included in the squad against Schalke following recent fitness concerns, leaving Antonio Rüdiger, Huijsen and Konaté as the principal senior centre-back options currently available.

AS reports that the circumstances have opened a potential route into the starting XI for Konaté earlier than might otherwise have been expected. There is, however, no confirmation that the 27-year-old will start against Schalke or that he has secured a place in Mourinho’s preferred defensive partnership.

The friendly in Gelsenkirchen represents Madrid’s final competitive test before the start of their league campaign and should offer Mourinho another opportunity to assess the balance of his back line.

For Konaté, any minutes would be particularly useful after a relatively short period working with his new teammates. His physical profile and experience at Liverpool give Madrid another established option in central defence, but his immediate role will depend on both his adaptation and the recovery timelines of those currently unavailable.

With Militão and Asencio sidelined, Madrid’s defensive depth has become an early selection issue. Konaté’s arrival was already designed to strengthen that area of the squad; the current injury situation may now accelerate his involvement.
