Hull City stun Manchester United with 2-0 win on Premier League return

Hull City marked their return to the Premier League with a statement 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the MKM Stadium.

The newly promoted side made the stronger start and took the lead in the 17th minute through Semi Ajayi, who reacted quickest after Oli McBurnie’s effort was kept out.

Hull continued to cause problems from set-pieces and doubled their advantage shortly before half-time when Nobel Mendy headed home from Regan Slater’s free-kick.

Manchester United struggled to establish control despite fielding new midfield arrivals Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos from the start.

Michael Carrick’s side saw more of the ball after the interval but failed to turn possession into sustained pressure. Bryan Mbeumo came closest to reducing the deficit, only to be denied by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Marcus Rashford was introduced from the bench as he made his first competitive appearance for United in around 20 months, but his return could not change the course of the match.

Hull protected their two-goal advantage comfortably through the closing stages to seal an impressive victory in their first Premier League fixture following a nine-year absence from the top flight.

For United, the defeat represents a disappointing start to the 2026/27 campaign and leaves Carrick with immediate questions to address ahead of their next league fixture.
