Getafe sign Francho Serrano from Real Zaragoza on deal until 2029

Getafe have completed the signing of Francho Serrano from Real Zaragoza, bringing the 24-year-old midfielder to La Liga on a contract running until June 2029.

The two clubs confirmed the transfer on Tuesday, with Serrano leaving Zaragoza after spending virtually his entire footballing development at his hometown club. He joined their academy as a youngster, progressed through the youth system and eventually became captain of the first team.

Getafe are adding a midfielder whose profile fits José Bordalás’ preference for competitive, tactically adaptable players. Serrano operates primarily in central midfield but has also been used in deeper and wider roles, giving the Madrid club another option across several positions.

The transfer also represents Serrano’s first opportunity to establish himself in Spain’s top flight. He leaves Zaragoza after reaching 200 official appearances for the club, having made his senior debut in November 2020 and grown into one of the most recognisable products of their academy.

His departure follows a difficult change in circumstances at Zaragoza. The club were relegated to Primera Federación last season, creating the need to reshape both the squad and wage structure for a lower division. Serrano still had a long-term contract, but an agreement to adjust his situation was not reached.

AS reports that Getafe have signed Serrano without paying an initial transfer fee, while Zaragoza have retained a percentage of a future sale. Neither club disclosed those financial terms in their official announcements.

For Zaragoza, losing a homegrown captain is significant beyond the sporting impact. Serrano had developed into one of the senior figures associated most closely with the club during recent seasons and leaves after more than a decade in its system.

For Getafe, the calculation is different. They are acquiring a player with extensive senior experience in Spanish football without a significant upfront transfer cost, while giving Serrano the chance to take the next step of his career in La Liga.

The move is now complete, and Serrano joins Bordalás’ squad immediately as Getafe continue to strengthen ahead of the new domestic campaign.
