Freiburg draw Monaco and Trabzonspor in Conference League league phase

Freiburg have been handed a Conference League league-phase draw featuring demanding trips to Monaco and Trabzonspor, balanced by a home schedule that gives Julian Schuster’s side a clear opportunity to build a strong points total.

The Bundesliga club will host Panathinaikos, Twente and Jablonec at the Europa-Park Stadion.

Their three away fixtures will take them to Monaco, Trabzonspor and Kauno Žalgiris.

The trip to Monaco is the obvious headline fixture.

The Ligue 1 side represent the strongest individual opponent in Freiburg’s six-game schedule and should provide the clearest measure of how far Schuster’s team can push in this season’s competition.

Trabzonspor present a different type of challenge.

A trip to Türkiye brings one of the more demanding atmospheres available in the league phase, and that fixture could become particularly significant in a competition where each club has only six matches to establish its position.

Freiburg’s home programme, however, looks more manageable.

Panathinaikos bring European pedigree and should provide the most prominent night at the Europa-Park Stadion, while Twente offer another technically strong opponent from the Netherlands.

Jablonec complete the home schedule and, on paper, represent the fixture in which Freiburg will carry the clearest expectation of taking maximum points.

The away meeting with Kauno Žalgiris offers another opportunity, although the travel and unfamiliar setting mean Freiburg will still need to manage the fixture professionally.

That balance gives the German side a credible route towards the upper places of the league table.

Unlike the Champions League and Europa League, the Conference League league phase consists of only six matches. With fewer opportunities to recover from dropped points, Freiburg’s three home fixtures take on even greater importance.

The draw therefore creates a fairly clear equation for Schuster’s side: establish control in Freiburg, avoid damaging results away from home and take something from at least one of the two major trips to Monaco or Trabzon.

Freiburg secured their place in the league phase on Thursday and will begin their six-match campaign on October 15. UEFA is still to confirm the exact order and kick-off times of the fixtures.
