Fiorentina sign Pedro Gonçalves on loan with conditional obligation to buy

Fiorentina have completed the signing of Pedro Gonçalves from Sporting CP on an initial loan deal that could become permanent for a total package of €25 million.

The Serie A club officially confirmed the Portugal international’s arrival after registering the transfer before the Italian deadline.

The agreement includes a €2.5 million loan fee and an option to buy worth a further €22.5 million. Football Italia reports that the purchase clause will become an obligation if specified conditions are met during the season.

The structure therefore leaves the permanent element conditional rather than guaranteed from the outset, although the full value of the deal could reach €25 million.

Gonçalves leaves Sporting after six years in Lisbon. The 28-year-old joined from Famalicão in August 2020 and became one of the central attacking figures of the club’s most successful recent period.

He finished his first season as Sporting’s leading league scorer with 23 goals and went on to win three Portuguese league titles, two League Cups, a Portuguese Cup and a Super Cup during his time at the club.

Capable of playing as an attacking midfielder, winger or second forward, Gonçalves gives Fiorentina another experienced creative option after spending the bulk of his senior career in Portugal.

The move also represents his first permanent step into one of Europe’s other major leagues since his earlier development spells with Valencia and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Unlike the earlier deadline-day reporting, there is no longer uncertainty over whether the transfer has been completed. Fiorentina have formally announced Gonçalves and his contract has been registered, with only the future conversion of the loan into a permanent deal dependent on the conditions contained in the agreement.
