Fiorentina step up Lucas Torreira return talks with Galatasaray

Fiorentina have stepped up their attempt to bring Lucas Torreira back to Florence, with talks over a possible return of the Galatasaray midfielder gaining momentum as the summer transfer window enters its final stages.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, there are growing positive indications around the deal and Fiorentina believe an agreement could potentially be reached. The structure currently under consideration is a loan with an option to buy, although no final agreement between the clubs has yet been reported.

Torreira is understood to be strongly receptive to the prospect of returning to Fiorentina, where he spent the 2021-22 season on loan from Arsenal before subsequently joining Galatasaray.

Contacts between Fiorentina and the Turkish champions had already been revived before Monday's latest development. Italian reporting on Sunday indicated that discussions remained active and described Florence as a destination the Uruguay international would welcome.

The renewed push therefore represents more than an exploratory enquiry.

Fiorentina are now assessing whether the conditions can be created to reunite with a midfielder whose previous spell at the Artemio Franchi remains one of the strongest reference points of his Serie A career.

Torreira made 31 league appearances for Fiorentina in 2021-22, starting 26 of them and scoring five goals as the Viola finished seventh. His importance extended beyond those attacking numbers: he operated as the deepest midfielder in Vincenzo Italiano's possession structure, offering an aggressive presence around second balls while providing a reliable first connection between the defensive and midfield lines.

A return would arrive in very different circumstances.

Fiorentina are now working under Fabio Grosso and the proposed deal would be about solving a current midfield requirement rather than recreating the side Torreira left four years ago. His familiarity with Serie A, ability to operate as a natural holding midfielder and previous adaptation to Florence would all reduce some of the uncertainty that accompanies a late-window addition.

The financial structure, however, remains important.

Torreira remains contracted to Galatasaray until 2028, meaning Fiorentina cannot approach the operation as a straightforward short-term reunion. Gazzetta reports that a loan with an option to buy is being considered, a formula that would allow the Viola to strengthen immediately without committing to a permanent transfer from the outset.

The club are also keeping alternative midfield possibilities alive. Gazzetta reports that Fiorentina have not completely abandoned their interest in Sassuolo midfielder Kristian Thorstvedt, another player familiar to Grosso.

That makes the Torreira negotiations significant but not yet definitive.

There has been no official announcement and no report of a completed agreement between Fiorentina and Galatasaray. The development is instead that a previously discussed possibility has moved into a more concrete phase, with the player's willingness and renewed club-to-club contact giving Fiorentina a realistic route towards completing the return.

Four years after Torreira left Florence following a season in which he became a central part of Fiorentina's midfield, the final days of the 2026 summer window have reopened a move that once appeared firmly consigned to the club's recent past.
