Fabio Vieira is closing in on a permanent return to Hamburg, with the Arsenal midfielder reported to have travelled to Germany for a medical ahead of a late-window move.

The transfer has not yet been officially announced by either Arsenal or Hamburg, but multiple German reports say the deal is now in its final stages. WELT, citing Hamburger Abendblatt, reported that Vieira has flown from London to Hamburg to undergo the usual medical checks, while BILD has described the expected fee at around €9m.

That leaves the move advanced rather than complete. Vieira’s travel and medical mark a clear step beyond negotiation, but the transfer still depends on the final paperwork and club announcements before it can be treated as official.

For Hamburg, this is more than a routine signing. Vieira spent last season on loan at the Volksparkstadion and became a priority target for the club after helping add creativity and technical quality to their attacking midfield. His return on a permanent deal would give HSV a player already familiar with the squad, the coach and the demands of the Bundesliga.

The 26-year-old had returned to Arsenal after that loan spell, but his long-term route back into Mikel Arteta’s plans had looked increasingly narrow. Arsenal signed him from Porto in 2022 for a major fee, yet his time in north London never developed into a secure first-team role, making a permanent exit logical for both the player and the club.

Hamburg’s pursuit also reflects urgency after their Bundesliga start exposed a need for more control and invention in possession. Vieira offers a left-footed creative profile who can operate between midfield and the forward line, and his familiarity with the club reduces some of the risk usually attached to a deadline-week signing.

For Arsenal, the deal would continue a broader late-window trimming of the squad, turning a fringe attacking midfielder into a sale rather than another temporary loan.
