Derby County consider Arthur Okonkwo as Charlton enquire over Wrexham goalkeeper

Arthur Okonkwo could leave Wrexham before the transfer window closes, with Derby County and Charlton Athletic both linked with the goalkeeper following increased competition for places at the Racecourse Ground.

Alan Nixon reports that Derby are considering Okonkwo as a potential addition, while Charlton have also made an enquiry over the 24-year-old. The same report says a loan move is being explored, although the goalkeeper’s wages could complicate the structure of any temporary deal.

Wrexham’s goalkeeping situation changed significantly this week after the club completed the signing of Anthony Patterson from Sunderland. Patterson’s arrival adds another senior option to a squad that already includes Okonkwo and could create an opening for the former Arsenal goalkeeper to move elsewhere in search of regular football.

There is, however, no indication that Wrexham have reached an agreement with either Derby or Charlton.

The exact nature of a possible exit also remains unclear. Sports Illustrated reported earlier this week that Wrexham were expecting Okonkwo to attract interest over a permanent transfer, with Charlton among the clubs monitoring his situation. That differs from the latest suggestion that a loan could now be considered, leaving both the destination and structure of any move unresolved.

Charlton's interest therefore has support from more than one report, but Derby’s involvement is currently based on the latest information from Nixon. Neither club has announced a deal or confirmed advanced negotiations.

Okonkwo joined Wrexham permanently in 2024 after an impressive loan spell from Arsenal and became an important part of the club’s rise through the divisions. The arrival of Patterson, however, has altered the competition for the No. 1 position at a point when Championship clubs are still assessing their squads before the end of the summer window.

For Derby and Charlton, the situation presents a potentially experienced Championship-level option, but any move would still require agreement with Wrexham and, depending on the proposed structure, a workable solution over the player’s salary.
