Coventry revive loan move for Manchester City defender Stephen Mfuni

Coventry City have revived their move to sign Manchester City defender Stephen Mfuni on loan, days after a proposed deal for the highly rated teenager appeared to have collapsed.

The newly promoted Premier League club are back in discussions over a season-long move for the 18-year-old, with talkSPORT reporting that Mfuni could yet complete a switch to Frank Lampard’s side before the transfer window closes.

Coventry had initially stepped away from the deal, prompting Manchester City to explore alternative Championship destinations. Sheffield United and Swansea City subsequently held talks over a temporary move, but Coventry have now re-entered the process and again emerged as the leading option.

BBC Sport had already reported that the clubs were in talks over a season-long loan, with Mfuni appearing set for a move to the CBS Arena. No transfer has yet been formally announced.

The renewed pursuit gives Coventry another opportunity to add a young, versatile defender to a squad that has undergone substantial change following promotion to the Premier League.

Mfuni has been part of Manchester City’s academy since Under-9 level and is regarded as a left-footed defender capable of operating both at centre-back and left-back. His development accelerated last season when he made his senior City debut as a substitute in the 10-1 FA Cup win over Exeter City.

He then joined Watford on loan for the second half of the 2025/26 campaign, making eight Championship appearances before an injury brought his spell at Vicarage Road to an early end.

That senior experience, combined with Mfuni’s ability to cover more than one defensive position, helps explain Coventry’s willingness to return to a deal that had appeared dead only days earlier.

Lampard has already overseen an extensive rebuild following Coventry’s return to the top flight, with the club adding experienced defender Ethan Pinnock among a series of summer arrivals. Mfuni would represent a different type of addition: a development-focused loan with immediate first-team potential and the flexibility to cover multiple defensive roles.

The late change in direction also leaves Sheffield United and Swansea facing the prospect of missing out after both clubs explored deals with Manchester City once Coventry’s original move broke down.

Negotiations remain active rather than complete, and neither Coventry nor Manchester City have announced an agreement. But the revival has put Mfuni back on course for a possible Premier League season under Lampard after his proposed Coventry move seemed to have fallen apart earlier in the week.
