Coventry City have been handed a midfield boost ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Manchester City, with Frank Onyeka available to return after missing the defeat to Hull City. Frank Lampard confirmed at his pre-match press conference on Friday that Onyeka is fit again following the problem that kept him out of Coventry’s previous fixture. The Nigeria international’s return gives Lampard an important option in central midfield as the promoted side prepare for one of their most demanding assignments of the early season at the Etihad Stadium. There could also be a first meaningful opportunity for summer signing Sidiki Cherif. Lampard said the young forward is continuing to build his match fitness but has now reached a stage where he is capable of making an impact. That leaves Cherif in contention to be included in Saturday’s matchday squad, although the Coventry manager stopped short of confirming how prominently he will feature. One player who will definitely not be available is Stephen Mfuni. The defender joined Coventry on loan from Manchester City but is ineligible to face his parent club under the terms of the arrangement. Lampard nevertheless spoke positively about the youngster, highlighting his versatility and the impression he has made since arriving. Coventry remain without several longer-term absentees. Haji Wright, Luke Woolfenden and Keane Kesler-Hayden are still sidelined and will not return for the trip to Manchester. Onyeka’s availability therefore represents the clearest positive development in Coventry’s team news ahead of Saturday. Lampard will now decide whether to restore the midfielder directly to the starting XI or use him as part of his options from the bench, while Cherif’s improving condition provides another attacking alternative against the defending Premier League champions.
