Chelsea set Manchester City deadline over £120m Enzo Fernández move

Chelsea have set Manchester City a deadline to make a serious move for Enzo Fernández as the Premier League champions consider their options in midfield.

According to Sky Sports and David Ornstein, Chelsea want any acceptable proposal for Fernández to arrive by 5pm UK time on Friday, August 14, with the Argentina international valued at around £120 million.

The deadline gives Manchester City a limited window to turn their interest into a formal offer. At the time of the latest reports, Chelsea had yet to receive a bid that met their demands.

Chelsea’s position also suggests they are unwilling to allow uncertainty over Fernández’s future to extend deep into the final weeks of the transfer window. With the new season approaching, resolving the situation early would give the club greater clarity over both their squad and any potential plans to replace such an important midfielder.

Fernández has become a major part of Chelsea’s midfield since joining the club from Benfica in January 2023. Comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and capable of progressing possession through central areas, he can influence games from deeper positions while also moving forward to support attacks.

His passing range and ability to control the tempo would make him an attractive option for a Manchester City side assessing the long-term shape of its midfield.

City’s interest arrives at a particularly significant moment. Barcelona are pursuing Rodri and have already seen an improved offer for the Spain midfielder rejected by Manchester City. Although there is no agreement for Rodri to leave, the situation has added another layer to City’s midfield planning during the summer window.

Fernández would not necessarily represent a like-for-like replacement for Rodri. The two midfielders offer different qualities, with Fernández generally providing greater freedom to progress into advanced areas and connect midfield with the attack. His versatility, however, would give City another high-level option capable of operating in different midfield structures.

For Chelsea, the reported £120 million valuation places the emphasis firmly on Manchester City. Fernández remains under Chelsea’s control, and there is no indication that the club need to sell unless their financial demands are met.
