Burnley sign Jamie Vardy on deal until end of season

Burnley have signed Jamie Vardy on a contract until the end of the season, adding one of English football’s most recognisable goalscorers to a squad still searching for its first Championship victory of the campaign. The 39-year-old arrives at Turf Moor as a free agent after spending last season in Serie A with Cremonese. His return to England gives head coach Nicky Hayen an experienced attacking option at a moment when Burnley have struggled to turn competitive spells into results. The Clarets have collected only two points from their opening five league matches. They began with a 2-2 draw against West Ham before defeats to West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City, then drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough and lost 2-1 at home to Bristol City on Saturday. Vardy therefore arrives not simply as a high-profile name, but as an immediate attempt to add experience and finishing quality to a side whose season has begun under pressure. Hayen described the striker’s experience and leadership as potentially “invaluable” to the squad and said Burnley believe he can make a significant impact during the campaign. Vardy, meanwhile, said he was eager to begin work and help move the club “in the right direction”. The move also brings Vardy back into the Championship, a competition he won twice during his extraordinary 13-year spell with Leicester City. His Leicester career ended with exactly 500 appearances and 200 goals. He was a central figure in the club’s 2015-16 Premier League title, later won the FA Cup and Community Shield, and finished as the Premier League’s leading scorer in 2019-20. Burnley will hope some of that experience can now translate into a very different challenge. Hayen’s team have conceded late goals in both of their most recent home matches, allowing Middlesbrough to equalise and Bristol City to overturn a deficit in the closing stages. Vardy cannot solve every issue behind Burnley’s winless start, but his arrival gives the club a proven penalty-box presence and a player accustomed to performing under pressure. Burnley return to Championship action away at Wrexham on Tuesday night. With the summer window already closed, the acquisition of a free agent with Vardy’s pedigree represents a significant late addition to a squad urgently needing its season to change direction.
