Bournemouth draw AC Milan and Real Sociedad in historic first Europa League campaign

Bournemouth’s first European campaign will include a landmark home meeting with AC Milan after the club learned its eight opponents for the 2026/27 Europa League league phase.

The Cherries, competing in UEFA competition for the first time in their history, will host Milan, Viktoria Plzeň, Sturm Graz and Hapoel Be’er Sheva at the Vitality Stadium.

Their four away fixtures will take them to Real Sociedad, Sparta Prague, Celta Vigo and Lillestrøm.

Milan’s visit is the immediate centrepiece of the draw.

For a club entering Europe for the first time after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season, hosting one of the continent’s most decorated sides gives Bournemouth a defining fixture before their campaign has even begun.

The Italian side will also provide the clearest test of Bournemouth’s ability to translate their domestic rise onto the European stage.

Away from home, the schedule presents a different challenge.

Real Sociedad represent the strongest opponent on Bournemouth’s travels, with the trip to San Sebastián likely to be among the most technically demanding fixtures of the league phase.

Celta Vigo add a second visit to Spain, while Sparta Prague bring greater European experience and an established home atmosphere. Lillestrøm complete the away programme and give Bournemouth a fourth distinct environment to negotiate during their first continental season.

The home draw offers more opportunity.

Viktoria Plzeň and Sturm Graz are experienced European opposition but fixtures Bournemouth can reasonably target for points at the Vitality Stadium, while Hapoel Be’er Sheva complete a home programme in which the Cherries will expect to establish the foundation of their campaign.

That balance should make progression a realistic objective.

The top eight teams in the 36-club league advance directly to the round of 16, while those finishing between ninth and 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off.

For Bournemouth, however, the significance extends beyond the final league position.

Their sixth-place Premier League finish in 2025/26 secured European qualification for the first time in club history, and this draw now turns that achievement into a concrete schedule: Milan on the south coast, two trips to Spain and four European nights at the Vitality Stadium.

The league phase begins on September 16 and 17 and concludes on January 28, with UEFA set to confirm the exact match order and kick-off times separately.
