Borussia Dortmund confirm Giannis Konstantelias ACL injury after debut goal

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Giannis Konstantelias suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during his Bundesliga debut, turning an impressive first league appearance into a major early-season setback.

The 23-year-old Greece international was injured in the second half of Dortmund’s 2-0 win over Hamburg on Saturday and will be sidelined for several months. Dortmund said Konstantelias went down in midfield in the 52nd minute and had to be replaced shortly afterwards.

The diagnosis is especially severe because of the timing. Konstantelias had scored his first Dortmund goal in first-half stoppage time, finishing the move that put BVB 2-0 ahead after Serhou Guirassy had opened the scoring. Within minutes of the restart, his debut had shifted from a statement performance to a long-term injury concern.

Konstantelias only joined Dortmund from PAOK earlier this month, signing a contract through June 2031. The club had identified him as a high-upside attacking midfielder with European experience, and his first Bundesliga outing appeared to show why Dortmund had moved so quickly to bring him from Greece.

Lars Ricken, Dortmund’s managing director of sport, said the news had hit the club hard and that the player would receive full support during his recovery. Dortmund’s immediate priority is now medical management, but the sporting consequence is difficult to ignore.

The injury removes one of Niko Kovac’s new attacking options at the start of the campaign and may affect Dortmund’s final transfer-window decisions. Konstantelias had been signed to add creativity, movement between the lines and another source of goal threat behind the centre-forward, qualities that looked visible even in a short debut.

Saturday’s win over Hamburg had already carried warning signs. Dortmund dominated the first half, took a deserved two-goal lead and then had to defend more deeply after Konstantelias’ injury and Samuele Inacio’s later red card. The result was positive, but the diagnosis changes how the opening weekend will be remembered.

For Dortmund, the challenge is now twofold: protect a new signing through a long recovery and decide whether the squad still has enough attacking depth to cover his absence. Konstantelias’ season has been interrupted almost as soon as it began, and BVB must now adjust without a player they had expected to integrate immediately.
