Blackburn Rovers consider loan move for Birmingham winger Patrick Roberts

Blackburn Rovers are considering a loan move for Birmingham City winger Patrick Roberts as Tony Mowbray looks to add further attacking options before the transfer window closes.

Alan Nixon reports that Blackburn have identified Roberts as a potential loan target, which would reunite the 29-year-old with Mowbray after the pair previously worked together at Sunderland.

There is no indication at this stage that Blackburn have submitted a formal offer or reached an agreement with Birmingham. The interest remains at an exploratory stage, and neither club has confirmed negotiations.

Roberts joined Birmingham initially on loan from Sunderland in September 2025 before the move was made permanent in February. His position in the squad has since come under greater competition, and he was an unused substitute in Birmingham’s opening Championship fixture against Sheffield United.

That situation could create an opportunity for Blackburn, who are still assessing additions late in the window. Mowbray has already indicated that Rovers expect further movement in and out of the squad before the deadline, although those comments were not made specifically in relation to Roberts.

The previous relationship between Mowbray and Roberts provides an obvious link. Roberts was part of the Sunderland squad during Mowbray’s spell in charge and played in an attacking setup that regularly used him from wide areas.

For Blackburn, the attraction would be adding another experienced Championship option without committing immediately to a permanent transfer. Any loan, however, would still depend on Birmingham’s willingness to sanction an exit and on the financial terms of the agreement.

For now, Roberts remains a Birmingham player and the reported Blackburn interest has not progressed to the point of a confirmed deal.
