Bayern Munich face Borussia Dortmund for first trophy of German season

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will renew their rivalry on Saturday night with the first trophy of the German season at stake in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.

The match will take place at Signal Iduna Park, where Bundesliga runners-up Dortmund host Bayern after Vincent Kompany’s side completed a domestic double last season by winning both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.

Bayern’s cup triumph meant Dortmund qualified for the Supercup as the league’s second-placed side, setting up another high-profile meeting between Germany’s two most prominent clubs.

The Bavarians enter the contest looking to carry their domestic dominance into the new campaign. Their attacking options include Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Díaz, giving Kompany considerable firepower ahead of the season opener.

Dortmund, meanwhile, will have home advantage and are preparing to challenge Bayern with a squad strengthened during the summer. Niko Kovač has indicated that he has a largely full group available, leaving him with several selection decisions ahead of kick-off.

Serhou Guirassy is expected to remain a major attacking threat for BVB, while new additions offer Dortmund further options as they seek their first silverware of the season.

The fixture also marks another chapter in a rivalry that has frequently extended to the Supercup. Dortmund and Bayern last met in the competition at Signal Iduna Park in 2021, when Bayern claimed a 3-1 victory.
