Barcelona complete signing of Rodri from Manchester City

Barcelona have completed the signing of Rodri from Manchester City, bringing the Spain captain back to La Liga on a contract running until June 2030.

The Catalan club confirmed the transfer on Tuesday after Rodri completed his medical examinations earlier in the day, formally ending a seven-year spell at Manchester City. Barcelona did not disclose the fee in their announcement. Reuters reports that the agreement is worth £65.4 million.

The move delivers one of Barcelona’s most significant objectives of the summer. Rodri had entered the final year of his City contract and chose a return to Spain at a point when Barça were looking to add an established holding midfielder capable of controlling games at the highest level.

His arrival gives Hansi Flick a player whose influence extends beyond the defensive phase. Rodri’s ability to dictate tempo, receive under pressure and protect the centre of the pitch has made him one of the defining midfielders of his generation, while his experience adds another senior voice to a squad built around a younger Spanish core.

Barcelona’s official announcement highlighted both his tactical intelligence and his ability to regain possession and distribute the ball, qualities that make the 30-year-old a natural fit for a midfield already containing Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo and Frenkie de Jong.

Rodri returns to Spanish club football seven years after leaving Atlético Madrid for Manchester City in 2019. His time in England produced four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League, with his goal against Inter in the 2023 final delivering City’s first European Cup.

His individual standing also changed significantly during that period. Rodri won the Ballon d’Or in 2024 after helping Spain win the European Championship and has since captained his country to the 2026 World Cup title, where he was named the tournament’s best player.

The final phase of his City career was more complicated. A serious knee injury in 2024 kept him out for more than seven months, while further physical problems followed last season. He also underwent minor back surgery more recently, which is expected to affect his availability at the beginning of the new campaign.

That medical history formed part of the attention around Tuesday’s examinations, but Barcelona have now completed the process and formally committed to a four-year agreement.

What had developed over recent days from negotiations, an accepted offer and a medical is therefore no longer a pending transfer. Rodri is officially a Barcelona player, giving Flick one of the most accomplished midfield organisers in European football as the club prepares for the 2026/27 season.
