Barcelona will not trigger Luis Suárez’s €80m Sporting clause, Romano reports

Barcelona are not prepared to trigger Luis Suárez’s €80 million release clause at Sporting CP, according to Fabrizio Romano, with the Portuguese champions maintaining their valuation of the Colombia international.

Romano reports that Barcelona have gathered information on the 28-year-old forward but consider the cost of a deal too high. Sporting are not expected to lower their demands, leaving Suárez on course to remain in Lisbon unless the situation changes significantly.

The €80 million clause is part of the contract Suárez signed when he joined Sporting in July 2025, with the agreement running until 2030.

Barcelona’s level of interest, however, remains unclear. Cadena SER previously reported that the club had made enquiries about the striker’s situation while considering alternatives in attack, but that no negotiations had taken place between Barcelona and Sporting.

Mundo Deportivo has offered a different account, reporting that sources at Barcelona do not regard Suárez as an active transfer target and that the club’s attacking plans remain focused elsewhere.

That distinction is important. There is no evidence of a formal Barcelona bid, an agreement between the clubs or negotiations over a reduced transfer fee. The latest development instead concerns the conditions under which a move could theoretically be considered and Barcelona’s reported unwillingness to meet Sporting’s clause.

Suárez, meanwhile, remains part of Sporting’s first-team plans. He featured in the club’s league match against Vitória SC on August 14, coming on during the second half.

Unless Sporting soften their position or Barcelona reconsider the financial terms, the current indications point towards Suárez staying in Portugal. For Barcelona, the reported decision not to pursue an €80 million deal would leave the club to assess other options as it continues to shape its attacking plans.
