Barcelona make João Cancelo return permanent with deal until 2029

Barcelona have completed the permanent signing of João Cancelo, securing the Portugal international on a contract running until June 2029 and turning his latest spell at the club into a long-term arrangement.

The move marks Cancelo’s third stint with Barcelona but his first as a permanent member of the squad. He initially joined the Catalan club on loan from Manchester City for the 2023/24 season before moving to Al Hilal, then returned to Barcelona on another temporary deal in January 2026.

That second spell quickly restored him to a prominent role. Cancelo made 23 appearances during the second half of last season, contributing two goals and four assists while operating primarily at left-back. His versatility across both defensive flanks has remained one of his main assets, giving Hansi Flick an experienced option capable of contributing both in possession and in the final third.

Barcelona have not disclosed a transfer fee in their official announcement. Reports in Spain have indicated that Cancelo separated from Al Hilal before completing the move, but the club have described the deal simply as a permanent transfer.

The decision to retain the 32-year-old also provides continuity in a squad that already knows his strengths and limitations. Rather than integrating a new full-back into Flick’s system, Barcelona are keeping a player who has already demonstrated his ability to operate within the coach’s structure and contribute immediately.

Cancelo’s first spell at the club produced four goals and five assists in 42 appearances during the 2023/24 campaign. His return last season strengthened that connection further and ultimately paved the way for Barcelona to secure him beyond another short-term loan.

For Cancelo, the agreement brings greater stability after several seasons defined by temporary moves and changes of club. For Barcelona, it resolves one area of their defensive planning before the new La Liga campaign gathers momentum.

What began as another loan reunion has now become a longer commitment, with Cancelo tied to Barcelona for the next three seasons and firmly incorporated into Flick’s plans.
