Barcelona agree deal in principle with Arsenal for Gabriel Jesus

Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle with Arsenal to sign Gabriel Jesus, moving quickly for a lower-cost attacking option while their pursuit of Julian Alvarez remains unresolved.

The proposed deal is worth £8.6m, or around €10m, according to Sky Sports, with all sides now working through the final details before the transfer can be completed. Jesus is expected to travel to Spain as Barcelona push to close the move before the deadline, but neither club has yet announced the signing.

That leaves the operation advanced rather than official. Barcelona have an agreement in principle with Arsenal, but the transfer still requires the remaining formalities, including final documentation and the usual completion steps, before Jesus can be presented as a Barcelona player.

The move is significant because it gives Barcelona a practical route to strengthen their forward line without committing the kind of fee that would be required for Alvarez. Atletico Madrid have resisted the idea of selling Alvarez to Barcelona, leaving the Catalan club to look at alternatives while keeping their wider attacking plans open.

Jesus offers a different profile. The Brazil international can play centrally or from wider positions, bringing pressing intensity, combination play and experience from both Arsenal and Manchester City. He would not arrive as the marquee solution Barcelona initially appeared to be seeking, but as a flexible forward who can give Hansi Flick more options across the front line.

For Arsenal, the agreement would continue a late-window reshaping of the squad. Jesus joined from Manchester City in 2022 and had important spells under Mikel Arteta, but his role has become less secure as Arsenal have altered their attacking structure and moved other forwards through the market.

The fee also reflects the stage of his Arsenal career. Rather than holding out for a major sale, Arsenal appear ready to sanction a controlled exit for a player who no longer sits at the centre of their plans, while Barcelona see value in a forward with elite-level experience available at a relatively modest price.

The next step is completion. Until the medical, documents and club announcements are finished, Jesus’ move should remain classified as an agreement in principle, not a confirmed transfer.
