Atlético Madrid sign Tottenham captain Cristian Romero

Atlético Madrid have completed the signing of Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur, adding the Argentina international to Diego Simeone’s defence on a long-term contract running until 2031.

The move brings Romero’s five-year spell in north London to an end after a period in which he developed into one of Tottenham’s senior figures and eventually took on the captaincy.

The 28-year-old made 156 appearances for Spurs and scored 13 goals, combining an aggressive defensive style with the ability to step forward in possession and defend large spaces away from his own penalty area.

Romero also leaves Tottenham with European silverware on his record. He played a central role in the club’s 2024/25 Europa League triumph and was later named UEFA’s Player of the Season for the competition.

His arrival gives Atlético an experienced centre-back who already has significant exposure to different tactical environments across Serie A, the Premier League and international football.

For Simeone, that experience could prove particularly valuable.

Romero is comfortable defending proactively, stepping out of the back line to challenge opponents and competing aggressively in one-on-one situations. Those characteristics fit naturally with an Atlético side that has traditionally placed a premium on defensive intensity, physical commitment and concentration without the ball.

He also brings leadership at a time when Atlético are continuing to reshape the squad around a mixture of established players and younger options.

The financial details of the transfer have not been officially disclosed. Cadena SER reports that Atlético will pay €35 million initially, with a further €5 million available through add-ons.

Romero had already signalled the end of his Tottenham career before the move was announced, posting a farewell message in which he reflected on his five seasons at the club and thanked supporters for their backing.

His departure represents a significant change for Tottenham, who are losing both an experienced defender and a player who had become an important voice within the dressing room.

For Atlético, however, the transfer provides an immediate reinforcement rather than a development project.

Romero arrives in Madrid in his prime, with extensive experience at the highest level and a profile that should allow him to compete for a major role from the beginning of the season.

The challenge now will be integrating him quickly into Simeone’s defensive structure and establishing the partnerships required in central defence.

With the transfer officially completed, Atlético have secured one of the most experienced defenders available in the summer market while Romero begins the next stage of his career in La Liga.
